"The starting point of this work began with a visit to my grandmother in the United States. I saw an old photograph of my grandmother with her 6 brothers and sisters, her father and aunt. Five of her brothers were murdered in the Holocaust along with her father. I reacted very emotionally to this photograph, perhaps because the five children in the photo were the same age as of my five children. I was very sad that the children in photography did not have continuity.
Each child has their own special rhythm and personality. So are the waves of the sea: each wave has its own unique rhythm. There are strong waves and gentle waves, there are wild waves and there are calm waves. No two waves are the same, just as no two children are the same. Once a soul is born, it continues like a wave in the sea, even long after a human eye can no longer see it. It is this continuity, and this uniqueness, that enables each of us to glorify God: There are souls who worship and glorify God in this world, and there are souls who glorify God in the next world. Hence, that all souls sing to God – Nishmas Kol Chai Tevarech – in breathtaking beauty, just like the endless waves of the sea.
I chose a composition that hints within the waves at the shape of mother and child. The child represents the infinite continuity of the parent.
